Snickerdoodles!

Last weekend I tried out another Lovin' From the Oven cookie recipe - her snickerdoodles! I followed the recipe pretty much exactly and the cookies were absolutely delicious, as per usual.

Here's the recipe:
1/2 cup butter, softened
1/2 cup shortening
1/4 cups white sugar

1 1/4 cup brown sugar

2 eggs

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour

2 teaspoons cream of tartar
(available in the spice aisle with cinnamon)
1 teaspoon baking soda

1/4 teaspoon salt

2 tablespoons white sugar

2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
Cream together butter, shortening, 1 1/2 cups sugar, the eggs and the vanilla. Blend in the flour, cream of tartar, soda and salt. Chill dough for at least an hour (I did it overnight). Shape dough into balls. Mix the 2 tablespoons sugar and the cinnamon. Roll balls of dough in mixture. Place 2 inches apart on ungreased baking sheets. Bake 8 to 10 minutes, or until set but not too hard.

  1. mmm these look fabulous! what's the cream of tartar for? to react with the baking soda? i wonder why she didn't just use baking powder

  2. yeah I think cream of tarter + baking soda basically equals baking powder, but I guess most snickerdoodle recipes use cream of tarter, I'm not entirely sure why.
